Parents, the danger of social media use by tweens and teens is not confined to online bullying and catfishing.

The latest revelations about how social media news feeds and algorithms work are among the many reasons that tweens and teens need to know the facts about social media and the many effects it may be having on them, from creating body image issues to becoming mired in misogyny or actively recruited by white supremacist groups.

Limiting your child's access to social media is simply not enough in an age where most kids know how to get around parental restrictions on social media use.

Instead, let your kids know the truth about misinformation, disinformation, manipulation, and social media use by sharing these resources with them - and help them find alternatives to social media while we do the same for ourselves.  Even if our specific vulnerabilities vary depending on what age we are, we are all in this together.
